I am delighted to be here this afternoon on this auspicious anniversary of the celebration of the Restoration of Benin Monarchy (111years nor bi moi-moi), being put together by our great sons & daughters of United Kingdom of Great Benin Empire( UKGBE). These Ambassadors rightly deserve our applause. As an Edo historian and author, nothing excites more when I take a flight to talk about my people & its culture. Let me commend members of the UKGBE for their enthusiasm in pushing the promotion of our heritage beyond boundaries in Africa to Europe, The Americas, Asia etc. It goes deeply to say that the Benin people are a unique race with resilient spirit. I have been invited to do justice to this aspect of this event notwithstanding the short notice of less than 48hrs. I must commend my son & cousin, Osaretin ERO, a broadcast journalist and culture enthusiast for encouraging me to do this academic exercise, to further amplify the legendary role played by ERO in this milestone achievement, the resilience , determination, unity and identity, Legacy of leadership. Today, we gather to celebrate a significant moment in our collective history - the Restoration of Benin Monarchy or Kingship. The story of this milestone is known by all ages, from cradle to adulthood in Benin Kingdom and around the globe. For the benefit of this occasion, it would not be out of place to recount or refresh the background to the Restoration. BENIN EMPIRE The Benin Empire was a powerful and influential kingdom in pre-colonial Nigeria, known for its rich culture art and traditions. Let's reflect briefly on the journey: ✓ Invasion of Benin in 1897: The British punitive expedition that ravaged our kingdom and plundered our treasured arts. ✓ The exile of Oba Ovonramwen N'Ogbaisi: Our monarch' forced departure remained a dark chapter in our history. ✓Ruling class headed by Chief Agho: The resilience and determination of our ruling chiefs during the 17 years without a King in Benin kingdom. ✓Chief ERO's clarification: The crucial role of Chief ERO in upholding the system of primogeniture, ensuring rightful succession. ✓ Restoration on July 24, 1914: Prince Aiguobasimwin enthronement as Oba Eweka II, marked a new era of hope and renewal in Benin kingdom. This celebration of the Restoration of the Benin Monarchy holds significant meaning for the Benin nation and its people, including those in Nigeria: SIGNIFICANCE 1. Cultural preservation: The celebration promotes and preserves Benin's rich cultural heritage, traditions, and values. 2. Historical significance: It commemorates a pivotal moment in Benin's history, honoring the resilience and determination of the Benin people. 3. Unity and identity: The celebration fosters unity and reinforces the Benin people's sense of identity, pride, and belonging. 4. Legacy of leadership: It acknowledges the role of the Oba and the ruling class in shaping Benin's history and future. The celebration serves as a platform for the Benin people and descendants to reconnect with their heritage, honour their ancestors and look towards a bright future. After a period of exile and adversity, the return of Oba Eweka II marked a new era of hope, renewal and cultural revitalization.
